Racquet Restringing Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Wondering if you need tennis racquet restringing? This guide covers everything you need to know about when to restring your racquet. Restringing is crucial to keeping you in the game and playing at your peak. Over time, the tension in your tennis racquet strings will decrease, causing your strings to stretch more. This gives the ball more cushion when you play and causes you to lose your precision and force. Racquet restringing breathes new life into your racquet, ensuring you can play well for many games to come.

This guide will help you determine when you need to restring your racquet, cover what’s involved in restringing, and offer signs to watch for. If you’re an avid tennis player, racquet restringing is essential to maintain consistent performance and prevent any potential injuries caused by worn-out strings. When your racquet needs to be restrung, check out our same-day stringing service. We also offer string while you wait and curbside pickup.

Signs Your Racquet Needs Restringing

What are some of the signs you need a racquet restringing? NYC Racquet Sports’ master stringer Woody Schneider says, “When you feel like you’re hitting the ball right but the ball is going wrong, that’s a good indication the strings have gotten too loose, and it’s time for a restringing.”

Here are more signs that your tennis racquet needs restringing:

  • Loss of tension: If you notice a significant decrease in the tension of your racquet strings, leading to a “dead” feeling or lack of responsiveness in your racquet, it’s a clear sign that it’s time for a restring.

  • String fraying or breakage: Obvious signs of wear and tear, such as fraying strings or broken strings, indicate that the strings have reached the end of their lifespan and need replacement.

  • Reduced control and accuracy: When your shots start to feel less accurate, and you struggle to control the ball’s placement, it could be due to worn-out strings that have lost their ability to grip the ball effectively.

  • Loss of power: If you need to exert more effort to generate power on your shots, it may be because the strings have lost their elasticity and playability.

  • Visible notches or wear on the strings: Check the strings carefully, especially where the ball makes contact most frequently. If you notice notches or visible signs of wear, the strings are wearing out.

  • Playability feels different: If your racquet doesn’t feel the same as it used to or if you’re experiencing discomfort while playing, it could be due to old, worn strings.

  • Decreased spin potential: Tennis racquet strings generate spin on the ball. It may be time for a restringing if you find it challenging to generate the usual amount of spin on your shots.

  • Regular maintenance intervals: Even if you don’t notice any immediate signs of wear, it’s generally recommended to restring your racquet every few months or after a specific number of hours of play, especially if you’re a frequent player. A good rule of thumb if you’re a recreational player, is to restring your racquet after every 40 hours of play.

How Often to Restring Your Racquet

How frequently you need racquet restringing depends on different factors, such as the type of strings you have, how often you play, your playing style, and personal preference. A general rule of thumb is to restring as many times per year as the number of times you play each week. So if you play twice a week, for instance, you may need a restringing twice per year.

Of course, there is some variability in this guideline. Regularly inspecting your strings and being attentive to changes in your racquet’s performance will help you determine when it’s time for restringing.

“It’s always better to err on the side of caution,” Woody says. “You can never go wrong with new strings. A good string job should last a fair amount of time.”

Factors that can affect how long your strings last include how hard you hit the ball and how often you play, Woody says. Also, personal preference comes into play, as some people have more tolerance for worn strings than others.

How Does Racquet Restringing Work?

Racquet restringing typically includes:

  • Removing the old strings: Our expert stringers carefully cut and remove the old, worn-out strings from your racquet frame.

  • Cleaning the racquet frame: We clean your racquet frame to remove any debris or residual string material.

  • Selecting new strings: There are different types of tennis strings available, each offering varying characteristics such as durability, power, control, and comfort. We work with you to help you choose the type of string that best suits your playing style and preferences.

  • Tensioning the strings: We pull the strings to a specific tension using a stringing machine. The amount of tension is based on your preference and the racquet’s specifications.

  • Knotting and finishing: Once the strings are correctly tensioned, we trim the excess string, and the knots are securely tied off. We may also add finishing touches like grommet replacement done before stringing when necessary, dampener installation, or stenciling.
